Does anybody else have this problem? Coughing up blood?

  • I live in Bakersfield, California, & one night when I was ten years old, I had a feeling like I was drowning & started coughing & coughed up TONS of blood [sorry, gruesome, i know]. I was coughing up blood for a few minutes straight. We ended up going to the doctor & they thought I had TB. They tested me & said it wasn't TB, but it was valley fever. They told me that tons of people in Bakersfield tend to get it & don't know it. If nobody knows anything about Bakersfield, we're in the valley & the air quality is HORRIBLE & there's dust EVERYWHERE. Well, I'm twenty now & every once in a while [mostly during the summer, I'm assuming it's because the air quality is horrible in the summertime] i will cough up blood. not large amounts, & not very often, maybe once every month or two at the MOST. it happens a lot less often than it use to. but i'll start to get that "drowning" feeling again & i immediately know it's coming & will cough maybe once or twice & will have blood in my mucus. When I noticed it kept happening a year or two after that first time, I went back to the doctor to see if it was normal & he said that it is & told me that when you have valley fever, you basically have it forever because it leaves a scar on your lungs. & he said that from time to time, that is expected to happen. I feel fine & everything, even before & after I cough up the blood, but it still worries me for some reason. I am just curious as to whether or not somebody else has experienced this?

By the way, I've never smoked in my life because of this, even if for some reason I wanted to, I wouldn't because I'd be afraid it'd make this worse. So I can rule that out right now.

  • Valley Fever isn't just where you live, it happens in lots of arid places. My suggestion for you is to run hepa air purifiers , especially in your sleep area. This should make the air quality better for your lungs.
