Outpost Firewall Service service hung on starting

  • My system has been locking up to the point that I can't even do a Alt-Ctrl-Del to break out of the lock. I have to re-boot the system. I looked into the Error logger today and discovered the error below:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7022
    Date: 27-Apr-05
    Time: 8:07:44 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: DELL
    Description:
The Outpost Firewall Service service hung on starting.

any ideas as to how I can get rid of this problem?

    Thanks!! :)

  • I have not changed anything.
I rebooted my computer, the one in question.
I looked into the system Error Logger - NO ERROR MESSAGE! The computer can up clean!

    What strangeness!

  • The Service Control Manager (SCM) is in charge of all the Windows services. That is starting, stopping, terminating and all the other service-related operations. All the commands to stop/start/restart a service go through the SCM. If the service is no longer responding to commands, the SCM will terminate it.

It appears to me that you may have a faulty install. I would suggest removing OP according to the 1. Save your configuration files and reinstall OP.

  • CDPlayer,

Could you list what other programs you have running on startup? One of those could be interfering with Outpost (networking software has the greatest chance of conflict). Running msconfig (via Start Menu/Run) and clicking on the Startup tab should provide a full list. You can also disable individual programs temporarily here by clearing the checkbox beside them if you fancy experimenting.

My OS is Windows 2000 SP4. W2K does not come with MSCONFIG. :(
BUT there is a site where one can go to get a copy of MSCONFIG and place it in your WINNTSYSTEM32 directory:
    h**p://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html

I don't know of a way that I can select (cut & paste) the items under STARTUP in MSCONFIG. If you do please inform me. If not I can just type them in. :)
    ADDED:
I found a way to get you the list you requested. :D

  • That Tea Timer in Spybot S&D often causes unexpected problems. I can't say that it's the problem here but perhaps you might try turning off for a while if the error returns.

    Thanks Manny for the tip!

I have yet to reboot. :D (Yep I am chicken!) The computer is still running without any problems. OP seems to be happy. I am running Spybot (how did you know :D ) with the Tea Timer turned on. So far OP does not appear to have a problem with it.

  • I performed the procedure twice. Originally I had OP installed on drive G. So when I went through your procedure, which is excellent, I uninstalled and reinstalled a new copy of OP on drive G.

The procedure went very well. BUT when I looked into the Error Logger there was that error message below (different time) staring me in the face.

OK, so I decided I would do the procedure again but this time placing a new copy OP on drive C.

Again the procedure went very well. BUT when I looked into the Error Logger there was that message below (different time) staring me in the face again.

The only change on that computer that I can think of is that I installed a few pieces of software on that box after the initial OP installation. Maybe one of them OP doesn't like.

So I deleted several programs that I am no longer using (5). I defragged drive C and rebooted the machine. This time I didn’t get the error message!

I loaded the IP address in OP so that the DELL computer can talk to the other computers in my network. I saved the IP address and rebooted the computer.

BTW your Extended Outpost Uninstall/Reinstall procedure is the best because my registry was cleaned for the first time! It is kind of scary deleting 140 registry entries in one shot! Whew I am glad that part is over. I must admit that after the registry cleaning the system is moving faster.

I checked the system Error logger and that darn error is back again! The Dell wanted to talk to another computer so I had to give it permission. I wonder if there are any delays if that could cause OP to hang. Maybe OP didn’t like having to wait for me to give it permission. :)

OK after rebooting I got that error message again:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7022
    Date: 28-Apr-05
    Time: 5:15:11 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: DELL
    Description:
The Outpost Firewall Service service hung on starting.
    :( :(
If I stop and restart OP I discovered that I don’t get that error message……….

  • Nothing on that startup list seems a likely problem - when you mention everything working after a reboot, may we presume you have rebooted your system in the past without fixing this problem? Did you reboot between uninstalling and reinstalling Outpost?

  • Save the configuration1.cfg and the configuration1.ini files. When you reinstall you can bring these back and it will have your old settings and rules.

It's probably best to rename these files some else such as configurationold.cfg so as to not get confused with any new configurations. You can also take the opportunity to allow OP to automatically set up your configuration. That way you'll have two configurations that you can try.

Best of luck and I'm heading for cover.....

Oh yes! I forgot I place the guts of the comptuer in this forum.

    Thanks Chris! :)

  • I guess this is were the old saying is most true “you live and you learn”.

Thanks Manny for sending me the Extended Outpost Uninstall/Reinstall Instructions. If you see the lights dim in your town you’ll know that I didn’t do something right. :D

    Added:

Ok, I have read through your instructions and save my conf file. For me it is configuration1.cfg. Well that is the only one I could find in the OP folder. :) There were several other files with similar names, which I saved as well. In fact, I copied the entire OP folder to another computer this way (I think/I hope) I have saved all of the correct files.

So I need only the one file (configuration1.cfg) correct?

    Wish me luck!

    Hello Paranoid2000!
    Thank you for replying!

Yes I have rebooted my system in the past without fixing this problem. This problem started according to the system error logger on April 21, 2005 4:04 PM. My guess is that's when my computer started locking up on or after that date. :(

I really didn't pay much attention to the initial system lockups. I just thought that this is just the nature of the beast. I rebooted and moved on.

Both times I rebooted immediately after uninstalling and after reinstalling Outpost.

This STRANGE occurrence happened (my computer booting up without errors) earlier today. Last night after the second uninstall/reinstall OP attempt this is when I performed my final reboot. That’s when my friend (the error message) returned.

Since the clean boot this morning, I have not rebooted. :)
